There is a reason this place has been open for 107 years as of 2025. It's excellent. First, you can't go wrong with any of the sandwiches. These are the kind of people who value and love the food they make. Second, the bakery items are perfectly done. They are where the bar is set. Be warned that it will cause you to compare all other bread to this bread. Last but not least, the pastas and other items in the store are there for people who want to make the dish right. This is the kind of place that is sacred among Italian families. This is not a "we should try that place." kind of establishment. This is a " I'm gonna fix all your sandwich problems for the rest of your life" kind of establishment.
The quality of the food is always top notch. I’d be shocked if someone could find a better deli in Stockton, or the surrounding area. But the owner of Genova is what makes it special. Every time I come in, he treats me with warmth, shares a story about a family friend that I remind him of, and makes me feel accepted. The food is amazing, but the hospitality and the humanity of the whole establishment is something I’ve never really experienced — especially not so authentically. Every work break I get, I make sure to stop by. Every time I find myself looking forward to my next visit. Also, the cookies are great too.
I've been coming here since I was a child back in the 70's. Their bread is Legendary and a Stockton must visit along with their big variety of Deli choices. Fresh baked bread and fantastic sandwiches!
Limited parking, small store. Came here for the award winning sandwiches and so did many others. About a dozen of us stuffed into the shop waiting for our turn to order from the deli and another line to pay. We got 4 sandwiches, a small side of broccoli pasta salad, and a small French bread loaf. All were delicious, especially the broccoli pasta salad, and well worth the special visit and wait. Staff were working as quickly as they could to facilitate the orders. Everyone was very friendly, even other customers making room for others to shop and get what they needed or noting the order that they came in as they had to shuffle around in the small space. Lots of specialty Italian items, you'll sure find what you need here. Hope to return soon.
I lived in the little house across the street 60 years ago. My five sisters and a brother would go over to the bakery often and hang out with the bakers. I was the oldest, so they let me help out sometimes. I will be coming to visit the store next week from Wake-Forest NC and can't wait to see it again. I'm going to be hungry and will surely be eating more than I should. GOOD MEMORIES!
