Experience the Present Day Speakeasies of Stockton, California
A brief history of Stockton's speakeasies and the present day spots that continue its traditions.
Beer flat. Blind pig. Blind tiger.
There have been a few alternative names for the traditional Speakeasy, the historical spots known for serving alcohol and providing recreation during the Prohibition era. These hidden spots stretched throughout the nation throughout the 1920s and early 1930s—and Stockton was no exception. In this blog, we’ll give you a brief history of Stockton’s speakeasies during this period and how they evolved into popular spots throughout our city today.

“Can’t repeat the past?…Why of course you can!” – Jay Gatsby.
The “roaring ‘20s” was taking place all over the nation, and Stockton was no exception. The popular dance known as the Charleston made its way to the city thanks to Willis, who performed it at the events his father’s business catered. Chinatown was home to underground gambling dens, run by the Tongs that resided here. Prizefighting took place at Oak Park, with top names of the time put on boxing classics—when the speakeasy made its mark here in Mudville.
Before the passing of the Volstead Act of 1920, Stockton was home to dozens of saloons. As Prohibition set in, “blind pigs” began springing up all over the city—the name referring to either something hidden or to the reality of police turning a blind eye to illicit bars and saloons. A total of thirty-nine “blind pigs” were operating in Stockton. Places like The Dreamland, the Cinderella Ball Room, and the Granada (or the Old Poodle Dog) provided the “flaming youth” of the ‘20s a secluded spot to savor the now illicit libations and dance the night away. These spots were frequented by diverse, multicultural attendees all equally looking for the same things: a spot to let loose and temporarily forget the worries of the real world.
In a brief era that butted against invading intolerance, the speakeasy was a safe space for inclusivity.
